The Garden Collective follows the P4W Memorial Collective, a group of formerly incarcerated women and activists working to build a memorial on the grounds of the former Prison for Women (P4W) in Kingston, Ontario. Though the institution has been closed for nearly twenty years, the city of Kingston and neighbouring Queen’s University have refused to recognize the abuses and subsequent suicides that took place within prison walls.
Through interviews with the Collective, the film explores the ways in which the prison is currently being remembered (or forgotten) in Canadian social memory, and looks at how the memorial might offer some healing or justice to the women who survived P4W.
