In Portrait of a 70-Foot Artist Newfoundland artist Andrea Cooper lampoons and scrutinizes modern-day images of sexiness and femininity. Picture this: a 70-foot sex-pot towering over the city of St. John's, Newfoundland -a combination of grotesque glamour and King Kong-like terror. Fed a steady diet of Barbies and perfect B-cups since childhood, St. John’s-based multi-media artist Andrea Cooper realised early on that she, and the women around her, didn’t look much like the women she saw on Charlie's Angels or in Seventeen magazine. Cooper fought back by creating a cast of giant, 70-foot femme fatale in her own image. In her paintings, videos and Web art, these Amazon women invade St. John’s damp and blustery streets. In Portrait of a 70-Foot Artist, award winning director Anita McGee looks at this distinctive young artist’s work, whose credo is ‘Home is not Hollywood, and I am not a movie star.’
The film is produced by St. John’s based Ruby Line Productions Inc. in association with Bravo! The Arts and Entertainment Network and with the financial participation of the Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation, Telefilm Canada, the Canadian Television Fund’s LFP program, W and CBC Atlantic.
