Échelle humaine (in English: human scale and/or human ladder) issues from thoughts on the accelerated lifestyles, on the mechanized tempo of everyday life, and on one’s duty to be productive. In a drab and institutional setting, the artist plays the game of work. Objects come alive, the body is set in motion, powered by an invisible force, manipulated like a puppet. The soundtrack, constructed with samples of the metallic noise of a stepladder, evokes an industrial environment.
Échelle Humaine is a physical, visual, and audio commentary on the ‘fast paced’ rhythm of our lives, and our own need to be forever actively and productively ‘doing’. The video takes place in a university screening room. This institutional and minimal surrounding, allows us to see what is passing us by through a large window. In a way that plays with transparencies, reflections, fades, and dissapearances, the video lets real time meets reconstructed time in a seemingly natural rhythm created through jump cut editing.
